Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance announces hiring of Executive Director, Chris Walker
The Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance is proud to announce the hiring of its first official Executive Director, Chris Walker, marking a significant milestone for the newly formed organization and for the future of downtown Grand Rapids.
Walker, a local Grand Rapids leader, brings a rich blend of community engagement, business ownership, nonprofit development, and marketing experience. He most recently served as Development Director at KAXE, where he expanded sponsorship opportunities, strengthened partnerships across Northern Minnesota, and led fundraising initiatives to support the station’s mission. He also played a key role in planning Grand Rapids Riverfest, securing event sponsorships and coordinating the food and beverage vendor area.
Prior to KAXE, Walker worked as an Account Manager at the Flint Group, supporting clients in the development and execution of marketing strategies and digital initiatives. Earlier in his career, he spent a decade with Zorbaz on the Lake, including several years as an owner/operating partner.
Through his experience operating Zorbaz restaurants in Spicer, and later in Grand Rapids, he brings a valuable perspective on the needs of potential Alliance members, along with a deep knowledge of tourism and recreation that will benefit the downtown community.
In accepting the role, Walker shared his enthusiasm for the opportunity: “I’m thrilled and honored to serve as Executive Director of the newly formed Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance. There’s been a lot of growth in downtown recently, and I’m eager to help build off that momentum. With assistance and input from our board, downtown business owners, stakeholders, and the community, I’m looking forward to exploring more ways to help downtown thrive and leave its mark as a hotspot for visitors and community members.”
Board Chair Bill Martinetto also expressed his excitement for the hiring: “Chris brings an extremely positive energy to this organization. We are lucky to have his passion and commitment to our community as he leads us on these downtown initiatives. We look forward to supporting him, as a board, to focus efforts on continuing to build an accessible, thriving and active downtown.”
Walker’s first major initiative will include finalizing the downtown brand identity and launching a new member campaign to support the alliance’s first project, which they’re aiming to announce in the spring. As Executive Director, he will lead efforts to strengthen downtown vibrancy, support local businesses, enhance visitor experiences, and cultivate a thriving, welcoming center for residents and tourists alike.
